Photocatalytic Silica–Resin Coating for Environmental Protection of Paper as a Plastic Substitute

Water-resistant silica-resin coating on paper cellulose. The coating layer, which is only a few micrometers thick, contains anatase nanoparticles (blue balls) that are finely disseminated throughout the porous structure. When exposed to light, their moderate photocatalytic activity destroys incoming bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (purple grapes), protecting the paper from the environment for an extended period of time.
